Primary care for the elderly. What is it and what is its scope?
Day care for seniors includes a wide range of activities aimed at providing them with support, security and comfort in their daily life. At the same time, the Caregiver’s task is to enable the elderly person to maintain their independence, dignity and influence their own psycho-physical condition.

The scope of primary care for an older person includes:
Elderly care: The caregiver assists the senior with daily personal hygiene, including: bathing, dressing, oral care, skin care and hair care.
Preparing and assisting with meals for the senior: The caregiver assists with meal planning and preparing healthy and balanced meals according to the senior’s dietary requirements and food preferences.
Watching over medication intake: The caregiver can assist in organising and reminding the elderly person to take their medication regularly as prescribed by their doctor.
Assisting with mobility and movement: Assisting the senior with mobility, assisting with getting up, walking, using home rehabilitation equipment and assistive equipment e.g.: cane, wheelchair and assisting with safe movement.
Assistance with communication: Helping the senior to communicate with doctors, health care professionals, offices, institutions, also with the use of the telephone, computer, reading correspondence, relaying questions, concerns, clarifying issues, etc.
Responding, assisting and caring in the event of danger to life or health: Providing immediate assistance in emergency situations such as an accident, life-threatening illness or other event requiring urgent intervention and contact with a doctor and/or family.
Emotional and social support: The caregiver provides emotional support to the elderly person through conversation, patient listening, attentiveness to their needs and also empathetic accompaniment in daily activities.
Health monitoring: The caregiver monitors the senior’s health, observes any changes in mood, behaviour, physical condition and reports them to the family and/or doctors.
